Special Program: International Priority Graduate Programs (PGP)

The International Ph.D. Program (IPhD) in Economics was selected as one of the International Priority Graduate Programs by MEXT. MEXT shall allocate scholarships and international travel funding to Japan for three IPhD students admitted in Fall , and . In addition, the PGP scholarship recipients will receive a tuition waiver from YNU. The PGP scholarship provides a monthly stipend of 148,000 yen (subject to change) for three IPhD students for up to three years of study (contingent upon excellent academic performance). The PGP scholarship recipients will receive priority in their housing application for a furnished room with internet connection in the Ooka International Residence (about a 40-minute commute from YNU) or Tokiwadai International Residence located on campus. (Internet fee is included in utility/management fee.)

Applicants must be born on and after April 2, 国費資格誕生年<--> who are newly arriving in Japan.

Students graduating from universities with academic exchange agreements with YNU will be given preferential treatment.

Applicants must have demonstrated excellent academic achievement with a grade point average of 2.30 (out of 3.00) or above in the last two academic years and be expected to maintain the equivalent level during the scholarship period.

    The application materials below must be submitted by e-mail and registered mail.

Note: Effective for applications for October , and , the Japanese Government Scholarship (University Recommendation) selection will be subjected to a listing of Priority Regions as assigned by MEXT.

The selection criteria and other conditions are reviewed annually and may be subject to change at the discretion of MEXT.

Required Application Materials

  1. Application for Japanese Government Scholarship
    We will provide the form with notification.
  2. Field of Study and Research Plan
    We will provide the form with notification.
  3. Photograph (4.5×3.5 cm, taken within the past six months, upper body, full faced, no hats. Write your name and nationality on the reverse side and paste it onto the application form. Digital photographs are also acceptable).
  4. Abstract of thesis or research paper
  5. Recommendation from a high-ranking person such as the dean of a department, the program director, or a person in an equivalent position at the last university attended addressed to Dr. UMEHARA Izuru, President, Yokohama National University.

5. Recommendation letter

Recommendation Letter must be sent to the following address by postal mail:

The letter must arrive no later than February 9, 2026.

Selection and Results Notification

At the time of the Online Application for International Ph.D. Program
Applicants will inform YNU of their intention to apply for the PGP scholarship.
After announcement of results
YNU will notify the three successful nominees of the PGP scholarship selection results together with results of the entrance examination. YNU also provides specified forms to successful nominees.
By Mid February,
YNU will recommend nominees to MEXT.
By the end of June, (tentative)
MEXT will notify YNU of the names of selected scholarship recipients.
By the first week of July (tentative)
YNU will notify the successful recipients of the scholarship selection results.
October
The PGP scholarship funding will commence in October following arrival in Japan.
