Special Program: International Priority Graduate Programs (PGP)

The International M.A. Program (IMAP) and International Ph.D. Program (IPhD) in Economics were selected as one of the International Priority Graduate Programs by MEXT. MEXT shall allocate scholarships and international travel funding to Japan for one IMAP student and two IPhD students YNU selects from among students entering the program each year. In addition, the PGP scholarship recipients will receive a tuition waiver from YNU. The PGP scholarship provides a monthly stipend of 147,000 yen (subject to change) for one IMAP student for up to two years of study (contingent upon excellent academic performance) and a monthly stipend of 148,000 yen (subject to change) for two IPhD students for up to three years of study (contingent upon excellent academic performance). The PGP scholarship recipients will receive priority in their housing application for a furnished room with internet connection in the Ooka International Residence (about a 40-minute commute from YNU) or Tokiwadai International Residence located on campus

Applicants must be under 35 years of age as of April 1, 2022 (i.e. born on and after April 2, 1987). Applicants residing in Japan (or planning to reside in Japan) before the Fall 2022 semester starting on October 1, 2022 are not eligible for this PGP scholarship offer from IMAP and IPhD in Economics.

Applicants must have demonstrated excellent academic achievement with a grade point average of 2.30 (out of 3.00) or above in the last two academic years and be expected to maintain the equivalent level during the scholarship period.

    The below application materials must be submitted by e-mail and registered mail.

Note: Effective for applications for October 2014 onwards, the Japanese Government Scholarship (University Recommendation) selection will be subjected to a listing of Priority Regions as assigned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan.

The Priority Regions, 2017 are as follows: ASEAN, East Asia, Southwest Asia including India, Russia and CIS countries, Africa, Middle East, South America, Central and Eastern Europe, USA.

The current designation as the International Priority Graduate Program by MEXT ends with the student cohort admitted in Fall 2022. The International Ph.D. Program in Economics is going to reapply for the designation. If the program is selected, MEXT will offer scholarships and pay for international travel expenses to select International Ph.D. Program students admitted in Fall 2023 and onwards. Students graduating from universities with academic exchange agreements with YNU will be given preferential treatment.

  3. Photograph (4.5×3.5 cm, taken within the past six months, upper body, full-faced, no hats. Write your name and nationality on the reverse side and paste it onto the application form. Digital photographs also acceptable).
  4. Abstract of thesis or research paper
  5. Recommendation from a high-ranking person such as the dean of a department, the program director, or a person in an equivalent position at the last university attended addressed to Dr. UMEHARA Izuru, President, Yokohama National University.

Important Points on Application Submission

  1. It is recommended that you send the scholarship application documents by registered express mail or an equivalent air courier (e.g. Federal Express, DHL, UPS).
  2. The scholarship application documents and the application materials for International Ph.D. Program can be sent together.
  3. Application scholarship documents cannot be returned.

Selection and Results Notification

November, 2021
Document Screening: The PGP scholarship candidates will be selected.
December, 2021
Screening Interview
By the middle of January, 2022
YNU will notify the three successful nominees of the PGP scholarship selection results. Scholarship application documents must arrive not later than February 18, 2022 and must be postmarked no later than February 18, 2022
By March 24, 2022
YNU will recommend nominees to MEXT.
By the end of June, 2022
MEXT will notify YNU the names of selected scholarship recipients.
By the first week of July 2022
YNU will notify successful recipients of the scholarship selection results.
October 2022
The PGP scholarship funding will commence in October following arrival in Japan.
